THE EFFECT OF REPEATING GAMMA RAY BURSTS ON V/Vmax
نویسنده
چکیده
I consider the effect of repeating burst sources on the 〈V/Vmax〉 statistic. I find that if the burst sources are distributed homogeneously in a d-dimensional space, 〈V/Vmax〉 converges to d/(d + 3) as long as the luminosity function is independent of position. Choosing the brightest event from a cluster of k events shifts the luminosity function to higher luminosities, but if the original luminosity function is position-independent, it remains so. Therefore the treatment of repeating events, if applied consistently, will not affect the effectiveness of 〈V/Vmax〉 as a test of burst homogeneity. The calculation of 〈V/Vmax〉 for apparent repeating and nonrepeating source populations will be biased by the incorrect classification of faint bursts. In conclusion, the current practice of calculating 〈V/Vmax〉 using all bursts, even apparent repeaters, and treating multi-spike bursts as single bursts, is valid and consistent. Gamma-Ray Burst Luminosity Functions Based On a Newly Discovered Correlation Between Peak Spectral Energy and V/Vmax
We have discovered a correlation between the observed peak spectral energy Epk,obs and the Euclidean value of < V/Vmax > of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). We present the evidence for the correlation in the GUSBAD catalog and use it to derive the luminosity function of GRBs without using any redshifts. The procedure involves dividing GUSBAD GRBs into five spectral classes based on their Epk,obs. The o...
متن کاملLuminosity Function of Gamma-Ray Bursts Derived Without Benefit of Redshifts
We show that the Euclidean value of < V/Vmax > for gamma-ray bursts (GRB) selected on a timescale of 1024 ms is correlated with spectral hardness. The value of < V/Vmax > ranges from ∼ 0.42 for soft bursts to ∼ 0.26 for the hardest bursts. Given that the Euclidean value of< V/Vmax > for cosmological objects in a well defined sample is a distance indicator, the hard bursts must reside at larger ...
متن کاملLuminosities and Space Densities of Short Gamma-Ray Bursts
Using the Euclidean value of < V/Vmax > as a cosmological distance indicator, we derive the isotropic-equivalent characteristic peak luminosity of gamma-ray bursts both longer and shorter than 2 s. The short bursts have essentially the same characteristic peak luminosity of 0.6 × 10 erg (0.064s) as do the long bursts. This may apply also to bursts with durations less than 0.25 s. The local spac...
متن کاملThe distance scale of cosmological γ-ray bursts
The isotropic but radially non-uniform distribution of γ-ray bursts (GRBs) observed with the Burst and Transient Source Experiment (BATSE) on board the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory (CGRO) suggests that the bursts may be at cosmological distances. At such distances, the expansion of the Universe should have two main effects on the statistics of γ-ray bursts: first, it should stretch the tempora...
متن کاملThe GUSBAD Catalog of Gamma-Ray Bursts
The GUSBAD catalog of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) is based on archival BATSE DISCLA data covering the full 9.1 years of the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory mission. The catalog contains 2204 GRBs, including 589 bursts not listed in the Current Batse Burst Catalog. The GUSBAD catalog is uniform in the sense that the detection criteria are the same throughout and that the properties given in the catalo...
